Official Sappi Description of the Muskegon Mill
(As published on their website August 30, 2009)

Our Mill

Located on Muskegon Lake, a natural harbor on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, our Muskegon Mill produces coated free sheet papers. PM No. 5 at the mill uses SFPNA's patented online finishing technology.

Our Environment

The Muskegon Mill has achieved triple Chain of Custody certification by the Forest Stewardship Council, Sustainable Forestry Initiative and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, demonstrating the mill's commitment to producing paper in a responsible and sustainable manner. We are also an active participant in the Pulp and Paper Pollution Prevention Program (P5), a partnership between the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Michigan Pulp and Paper Environmental Council, which includes Sappi Muskegon Mill as a charter member. Under P5, mills develop innovative approaches to reducing pollution at their facilities each year.

Our Certifications:
FSC Chain of Custody: BV-COC-061202
SFI Chain of Custody: BV-SFICOC-US-08000078
PEFC Chain of Custody: BVC-PEFCCOC-US08000079

Our Community

In August 2000, the Muskegon Mill celebrated its 100th anniversary. Throughout its history, this mill has worked with the Muskegon community and made important contributions to organizations such as the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society and the United Way. The mill's Community Connections Committee has played a key role in these initiatives.

Muskegon Mill At-a-Glance

Annual Production Capacity: 170,000 metric tons of paper
Products: LOE (Lustro Offset Environmental), Opus and Flo sheets
Employees: approximately 200

On March 2, 2009, we announced that we will suspend Muskegon's operations effective April 1, 2009 in light of significantly lower global demand for coated fine paper products, an industry-wide trend resulting from the continued weakening of the U.S. and global economy. If market conditions improve, a decision to re-start operations will be made. Current expectations are that mill production will be suspended for at least six months, during which time other mills within Sappi will make our complete range of products.
