In the spring of 2009 officials of South Africa-based SAPPI (current owners of the Muskegon Paper Mill) announced that they were temporarily closing down plant operations. While no firm promises were made, the company hinted that pending the correct market conditions the plant may reopen. Then in late summer 2009 they announced that the plant would permanetly shut down ... never to make paper again. A 100 year tradition was done.
The company's method was an example of public relations genius. They were able to gracefully and safely close down the plant using current employees. Any lack of moral or potential sabotage and reduced production was mitigated by the potential for a later return to work. Then when the permanent closing announcement came the community had pretty much conceded the fact that the mill would probably never reopen. By using a tiered approach to closing the facility, the news seems to have been accepted much more positively.
